2020 Access Opening Ceremony

Hello:)
Seoul YWCA is hosting English Access Microscholarship Program(Access) sponsored by U.S. State Department.
Access is an educational program which makes North Korean Students in South Korea improve their English ability in line with raising their global leadership.
As usual, Access is running in The Great Vision School in this year.
Originally it should have started in April, but the impact of COVID-19 has prevented us from having 2020 Access Opening Ceremony until May, 2020.
Thus, we managed to have it yesterday, on June 1st.
At the opening ceremony, there were 40 guests including Seoul YWCA staffs, students in the Great Vision School and teachers.
Students cheerfully participated in the introduction session of Seoul YWCA and Access program itself.
First, they watched a video where the president in Seoul YWCA, Ms.Lee Yoo Lim, encouraged their start. Then, they listened to a diplomat in the American embassy, Mr.Aaron Tarver, who said “Hello” in Korean clearly, cheering them up.
The vice-principal in the school, Ms.Kim Young Mi, advised them to form diligent habit for them to join in the program actively because this program takes place every Mondays and Fridays morning.
Finally, the ceremony finished by giving students certificate of microscholarship and small gift.

COVID-19 has brought about lots of changes in our lives.
The opening ceremony went online in part, and all participants had their lunch by keeping each other at a safe distance.
Students in the Great Vision School are going to learn English as well as adapt and react to new environment through Access.

Please keep your eyes on them who will dream bigger and bigger with Access!

Labeling GMO

Seoul YWCA staffs participated in a training session to learn more about GMO. “Genetically Engineered Foods”, “Genetically modified organisms,” or GMOs, are organisms that have been created through application of transgenic, gene-splicing techniques that are part of biotechnology. These transgenic methods for moving genes around are also called “genetic engineering,” or GE.       This relatively new science allows DNA (genetic material) from one species to be transferred into another species, creating transgenic organisms with combinations of genes from plants, animals, bacteria, and even viral gene pools. The mixing of genes from different species that have never shared genes in the past is what makes GMOs and GE crops so unique. It is impossible to create such transgenic organisms through traditional crossbreeding methods.        In South Korea, labeling GMO law is not enacted yet, so many citizens don't care about what GMO i...

Y-Teen Picnic in Hangang

The picturesque photo was taken in the picnic of Y-teens on the 2nd September. Seoul's sky was clear and high enough for the Y-teens enjoyed the picnic. They got together to have group activity about peacebuilding. Since some of them met each other for the first time, so they needed icebreaking first. And they had a meal altogether and had a quiz game.       The purpose of this meeting was making good relationship among Y-teen members. Seoul YWCA hopes the Y-teens have more feelings of peace and YWCA.
